First Friday

Event

Please note: This event took place in Feb 2025

First Friday is a monthly social and showcasing event open to anyone. It takes place in the Pervasive Media Studio every First Friday throughout the year except for August and January. As well as the chance to socialise in the Pervasive Media Studio, attendees joining the event will also get to see a selection of work by some of our Studio community.

February Event

This February First Friday is part of Bristol Light Festival, which invites visitors to explore the city’s popular and lesser-known paths, uncovering a new light of Bristol. We will showcase projects from our Studio community that explore the theme of light.

The Artists

Charlie Hooper-Williams is a composer and audiovisual artist who blends neoclassical piano music with innovative technology. Using his custom-built ‘harmonics machine,’ he explores new sonic possibilities on the piano. His performances have featured at Glastonbury Festival and the Battersea Park Fireworks event.

Julia Roneberger, a creative technologist, and Eirini Lampiri, an XR artist and researcher, collaborate to create immersive, tactile experiences that engage multiple senses in new ways. Their work explores interactive light installations, inviting audiences to play and create their own artworks using light. Their installation, Light Cubes, is an exploration of this concept.

Window Wanderland is a global art project that transforms neighbourhoods into outdoor galleries, fostering community connections. Founded in 2015 by Lucy Reeves Khan, inspired by her own experiences of isolation, it has since expanded to over 350 festivals worldwide. Join us at the studio to create your own paper display and connect with others through art.

Annie Davies is a sensory designer and consultant specialising in inclusive design for people with both hidden and visible disabilities. She will be presenting Hy-Proximities, a piece that highlights the contrasts between hypo- and hyper-sensitivities, allowing the audience to participate in the creation of the artwork.

Tine Bech Studio presents Dreaming of You, a reimagined floating cloud that shares colours and stories about technology. Co-created with children, it evolves with audience contributions, developing a voice of its own. Known for infusing immersive colour and playfulness into public and cultural spaces, Tine Bech Studio invites everyone to dream.

Liam Taylor-West is a composer and audiovisual artist. He creates interactive environments using generative lighting and sound. Liam will be demonstrating a work-in-progress artwork 'Walks', which looks at the patterns created from paths drawn when following infinitely-long lists of never-repeating directions.

About Pervasive Media Studio

The Pervasive Media Studio hosts an international community of over 200 artists, companies, technologists, and academics exploring experience design and creative technology. It's a space for risk taking and early ideas; for the kind of projects and questions that inhabit the meeting points of art, technology, and society.

The projects span play, robotics, location-based media, food, connected objects, interactive documentary, new forms of performance and more.

We have an open plan studio with a culture of generosity, curiosity, and interruptibility. We believe that by clustering people together from a broad range of backgrounds, with differing skills, experience, and opinions, all of our ideas become better.
