Lunchtime Talk: War of Words VR - WWI Poetry in Virtual Reality

Talk

Please note: This event took place in Jan 2015

Lunchtime Talks are a series of informal presentations at Watershed's Pervasive Media Studio. They normally take place at 13:00 on a Friday, are free and are open to everybody who is interested in what they do. Come along, bring a sandwich, and get to know more about the Studio community, current and up-coming projects, or residents' work.

In this week's talk John Durrant, designer at digital agency BDH, introduces their animated work combining Britain's greatest War Poet and DIY virtual reality googles Google Cardboard. John will present 'War of Words VR', a 360/3D experience of Siegfried Sassoon's controversial poem 'The Kiss', written days before the Battle of The Somme.

BDH's app 'War of Words VR' is available worldwide and designed for Google Cardboard and other phone mounts. It is the first virtual reality app for the BBC and was designed in part to promote the BBC Arts feature-length documentary film 'War of Words'.

John will talk about the techniques, hand drawn artwork, puppetry and CGI animation used in the project, including a short screening of Seven Poems, BDH's animated anthology of poetry for BBC iPlayer and the BBC's Remembrance Season.

There will be an opportunity to experience the app on Google Cardboard viewers (available on Amazon). The app can be download beforehand for free, via Play Store (Android) and App Store (iPhone coming 2015) by searching for 'War of Words VR'.
