Lunchtime Talks

Talk

Please note: This event took place in Dec 2015

Lunchtime Talks are a series of informal presentations at Watershed's Pervasive Media Studio. They normally take place at 13:00 on a Friday, are free and are open to everybody who is interested in what they do. Come along, bring a sandwich, and get to know more about the Studio community, current and up-coming projects, or residents' work.

This week Designer, maker and Studio resident Molly Price and founder of The Laser House in Bristol, Fiona Dowling will be joining us to share their recent experiences exploring maker culture in China.

This October, Molly, Fiona and a small cohort of UK makers and academics took part in Living Research a programme supported by British Council, Nesta, Arts and Humanities Research Council. The team were visiting and working with a variety of Chinese makerspaces, experiencing the rich variety of the making scene in China.

For Fiona, this was a chance to explore the similarities and differences between UK hack and maker spaces, and the recent and rapid proliferation of maker spaces in China. For Molly, her emphasis was more on scoping potential partners to manufacture smart materials and interactive textiles. Join us to hear about the things that interested and surprised Molly and Fiona on this short research visit, and to pick their brains about what might come next.

The Pervasive Media Studio is located within the Watershed building. Let us know if you'd like a tour and we'll be happy to show you around. Send an email to admin@pmstudio.co.uk
