Canadian enfant terrible Xavier Dolan (Mommy, Heartbeats) comes of age with his well deserved Cannes Grand Prix winner, based on the play of the same name by Jean-Luc Lagarce and featuring an all-star cast of top French actors.
This gorgeously shot melodrama centres on a terminally ill writer (Gaspard Ulliel), who returns home to break the news of his condition to his estranged family (including Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux and Vincent Cassel), who also have their own grievances to air. As buried resentments threaten to surface and fits and feuds begin to unfold, all attempts at empathy are sabotaged by the family's inability to listen and love.
Bold and stylistically daring and performed with thunderous emotion, this is a taut, tense story packed with explosive moments that marks a more mature, intimate approach for Dolan, who is fast becoming one of the most singular talents in world cinema.
This film screens as part of the 70 year twinning anniversary of Bristol- Hannover-Bordeaux.
