Spoken Word Night

“Exuding originality…accessible…atmospheric” ★★★★ - Intermission
"Raise The Bar exemplifies how spoken word has no fixed style—from the conversational to the melodic, the comedic to the poignant." - Epigram

We're delighted to welcome Raise the Bar, Bristol's biggest monthly spoken word poetry event, back for a new season - headlined by none other than Bristol-born poet and musician Dizraeli.

With its regular monthly slot at Watershed, each Raise the Bar show promises a to be a completely different and unique experience and as usual there will be a spoken word Open Mic session as part of the night. There are eight spaces available so remember to arrive promptly and sign up if you would like to have a go.

Dizraeli

Dizraeli is a rapper, multi-instrumentalist and sometime singer taking hiphop to new terrains. After six years pushing boundaries with his band Dizraeli & The Small Gods, winning the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition, receiving regular radio play and spellbinding crowds at festivals across Europe, in September last year Dizraeli left the band to explore new possibilities, taking him to some unexpected places.

He's composed the soundtrack for Tripped, a new parallel-worlds comedy on E4; toured France with producer and turntablist DJ DownLow; spent a week in the refugee camp at Calais, giving workshops and listening to migrants; travelled to Senegal to study West African music with an albino master resulting in the Eat My Camera EP - a head-nod-heavy and beautiful, unsugared songwriting unlike anything you’ve heard before.

“Touching, funny stories of riots, atheism and Englishness... Dizraeli embodies 21st Century folk” - The Independent

“Folk or hip hop? I don’t know, but Dizraeli makes me realise how wonderful it is to hear real English – fluent, witty and arresting." - The Times Saturday Review

Raise the Bar is a live events organisation, YouTube channel, artist development and online media platform providing artists with a high quality platform to perform their work, as well as showcasing some of the best spoken word poets in the world.
