French actor-turned-director Eric Caravaca's powerful and unsettling documentary unearths the mystery surrounding his sister Charlotte's death and the systematic erasure of her life by his parents, who harbour very different memories of their daughter.
Eric Caravaca's older sister Charlotte died, aged three, before he was born. But instead of treasuring her memory, his parents destroyed all evidence of her existence, and never mentioned her to the rest of the family. In a bid to understand their motivations, he digs deeper into their past, interviewing his parents and discovering a painful history, including revelations about the past stigma surrounding disability, and atrocities committed by the French during North African independence struggles (the family moved to France from Morocco).
Deeply personal and beautifully told, this is a heart-rending look at existence, death and intimacy that reminds us that every life, however short, should be celebrated.
