Resourceful indie horror duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead write, direct and star in this mind-bending, intensely original genre-hybrid and stunning homage to H.P. Lovecraft, in which two brothers return to the creepy UFO cult they escaped from years before.
Years after fleeing the New Age cult, brothers Justin and Aaron are living a humble existence in the real world, struggling each day to make ends meet. Tired of this meaningless existence, Aaron suggests that they revisit the commune after they receive a strange message from their former ‘family’, to investigate if things weren’t really so bad there. Aaron’s initial excitement is tempered by Justin’s reticence as on arrival they are welcomed by the community and are tempted by the seemingly idyllic lifestyle. But when the pair witness a series of inexplicable events, it leads them to believe all is not as it seems.
As with their previous work (Spring), Benson and Moorhead expertly fuse ambitious genre storytelling with intricate human insight, keeping the film emotionally grounded even as its increasingly twisted timeframes and tricksy narratives unfold. And boy, do they unfold. What does it all mean? You tell us. The possibilities are endless.
