Deaf Conversations About Cinema: Midsommar
Please note: This event took place in July 2019
Director Ari Aster follows up last year's terrifying Hereditary with this Scandinavian-tinged horror about a midsummer festival that gets very, very disturbing indeed.
The 17:50 screening on Mon 8 July will include Descriptive Subtitles and a short introduction by film writer and blogger Sven de Hondt which will feature simultaneous BSL (British Sign Language). The plot focuses on Dani (Florence Pugh) and Christian (Jack Raynor), a couple not getting on. Dani invites herself to join Christian and his friends on a trip to a midsummer festival in a remote Swedish village, but what begins as a carefree, idyllic retreat in a land of eternal sunshine takes a sinister turn when the villagers-slash-local pagan cult invite their guests to take part in an increasingly violent, disturbing and bizarre competition…
Aster himself as described it as "Wizard of Oz for perverts" whilst director Jordan Peele (Us, Get Out) said it "usurps The Wicker Man as the most iconic pagan movie ever to be referenced"... sound up your street? Bring your flower crowns and join us for the festivities.
Following the screening please join us for a post-show discussion with Sven and other audience members. The post show discussion will take place in the Café/Bar and will feature simultaneous BSL (British Sign Language) interpretation. You’ll receive 10% off drinks with your cinema ticket – so grab a glass and let us know your thoughts about Midsommar.
