The haunted house has been a staple of the horror genre pretty much since cinema began. But the best horror films are more than just creaky floorboards, faces at the window and things that go bump in the night. When done right the haunted house provides the perfect cinematic backdrop for a whole plethora of generational anxieties.

To mark the release of Hereditary, dare to join us throughout July as we open the door to some of cinema’s most notorious haunted houses to explore both them and the terrifying antagonists who dwell there. Just remember, it’s only a movie…
