Cinema Rediscovered returned to Bristol (which is now a UNESCO City of Film) for its third edition this July, putting lesser known cinematic visions centre stage, asking questions about the role of cinema, delighting audiences and launching a UK wide tour with support from BFI awarding funds from National Lottery.

Mark Cosgrove, Watershed's Cinema Curator and co-founder of the Festival says:

"The recent edition of Cinema Rediscovered created a real communal celebration of film’s rich history It was heartening to see so many people responding so enthusiastically about seeing digital restorations and original 35mm prints of films back on the big screen. The thrill of watching these films in the cinema is a truly unique experience. We are delighted to be able to take some of that experience to partner cinemas across the UK and Ireland with a tour of festival highlights including the new restoration of Jean Renoir’s classic Le Crime de Monsieur Lange.”

The 2018 festival proved more popular than ever with the introduction of free outdoor screenings and the presence of some very special guests including Bristol born director Mike Hodges (Flash Gordon, Get Carter) and director Leslie Harris presenting her 1992 debut Just Another Girl on the I.R.T. as part of the Festival’s strand celebrating brave, bold, funny and warm storytelling from and about extraordinary women.

Catch a special time lapse (thanks to Lobster Films) of the outdoor screening of Flash Gordon outside M Shed:

To mark Margaret Tait’s centenary, audiences were treated to a rare 35mm showing of Blue Black Permanent, her only feature-length work - a beautiful mix of dreams and memories weaving her beloved Scottish landscapes and three generations of women through an audacious “Russian doll” structure, it’s a must see. For anyone who missed this special screening we have teamed up with MUBI to unveil Blue, Black Permanent to a broader audience online through their platform throughout August. Watch it now.

There were also plenty of opportunities to watch brand new restorations such as Maurice, The Apartment as well as a launch preview of The Big Lebowski ahead of their release in UK cinemas. We are delighted to announce a UK wide Cinema Rediscovered tour running from Aug – Nov, including some of the brand new restorations premiered at the festival with support from BFI awarding funds from National Lottery.

Showing as part of Women on The Periphery, Ildikó Enyedi’s My 20th Century (1989), the newly restored dazzling first feature from Hungarian director and screenwriter Ildikó Enyedi whose On Body and Soul won the Golden Bear at the 2017 Berlin Film Festival is now available for bookings with support from the Hungarian National Film Archive. Cinemas so far confirmed include Home in Manchester, Showroom Workstation in Sheffield and the and ICA in London. Cinemas can book the film here.

We have teamed up with STUDIOCANAL to take the beautifully restored Jean Renoir classic Le Crime de Monsieur Lange on tour throughout August to some of the UK and Ireland’s best cinemas. A delightful and savage satire, heavily influenced by the French political spirit of the 1930s, it is also one of the last films film critic André Bazin (1918 – 58) wrote about. Cinemas confirmed include:

03/08/18 – Edinburgh Filmhouse

12/08/18 – Sheffield Showroom
