Digital technologies are increasingly used to distribute to and engage people with classical music: Touch Press' massively popular Orchestra app is an exploration of orchestral music with oodles of interactivity, and Glyndebourne has been streaming live opera to worldwide audiences, for free, for years. But how can we use new technologies to bring audiences closer to classical performance? How can we let the audience feel the music in new ways?

To answer these questions and recover the interactive spontaneity classical music has historically enjoyed, Watershed has joined up with Bristol Old Vic and Universal Music Arts and Entertainment to launch #BristolProms, a festival that will use digital technology to bend music into fantastical new shapes.

For this lunchtime talk, two of the digital innovators making experimental work for this season will be joining us in the Studio to give a work-in-progress, sneaky peak at what we can expect during the proms.

Filmmaker and Director John Durrant from BDH is developing From Every Angle, an intimate interpretation of a simultaneous live solo piano performance at Bristol Old Vic, using multiple close-up cameras and live vision mixing to bring you closer than ever before to an extraordinary of selections from Chopin's groundbreaking Études.

Scott Fletcher from Play Nicely is creating a unique visual accompaniment to Max Richter’s The Four Seasons Recomposed. He describes it as ‘a fixed narrative built in Unity 3D with reactive elements controlled by the realtime audio/performance’ and recent testing with a stand in orchestra proved that this will be an extraordinary and unforgettable event.

This Lunchtime Talk is part of Open Studio Friday, which takes place at the Studio every week.

Do you want to find out what is going on at the Pervasive Media Studio? Are you interested in meeting our residents, talking about a specific project or curious about pervasive media? Why not pack a sandwich and join us for one of our Lunchtime Talks and Open Studio Friday.

Lunchtime Talks are informal presentations by Studio residents and associates. They normally take place at 1pm on Friday, are free and open to everybody who’s interested in what we do.

After the Talk, we also invite you to stay with us for the afternoon to continue the conversation or work on your own projects. We provide chairs, tables, wireless and a great space. You bring what you need to work with (laptop/mobile). Our open afternoons close at 5pm.
