For 18 years Aerian has made some of the biggest and best web products in the world.  They build websites, apps, installations, experiences and campaigns with clients such as BBC, Vodafone, The Times, Danone, Sky and Nectar across a range of platforms.

Here in the Studio we are currently hosting one of Aerian's latest creations, a touchable tabletop that brings to life some of the earliest forms of cinema such as the Zoetrope, in a decidedly 21st century way. We have invited S'unya Dickman Head of Client Side Technology to come and tell us more about their adventures and to share what is involved in designing for touchable interfaces.

S'unya told us:

“We worked with the University of Bristol to create the “Making Pictures Walk” touchtable, and subsequent iPad App, a HTML5 powered animation tool. The touchtable allows users to select their own film segments and drag them across to form a sequence of playback - these images are then set in motion, giving the user the experience of filmmaking how it would have been back then.

To create the product, we needed to build physics into our application and use CSS3 and HTML5 to create three dimensional constructs that would be intrinsically understood in terms of design and purpose for an audience that spans three generations and multiple languages.

"We were incredibly excited to be involved in developing this project.  The table is the most complex HTML5 application we have made to date.  A great deal of time has been dedicated to refining the experience so that the early cinema devices we modelled gave the same visual experience as the real device. “

This Lunchtime Talk is part of Open Studio Friday, which takes place at the Studio every week.

Do you want to find out what is going on at the Pervasive Media Studio? Are you interested in meeting our residents, talking about a specific project or curious about pervasive media? Why not pack a sandwich and join us for one of our Lunchtime Talks and Open Studio Friday.

Lunchtime Talks are informal presentations by Studio residents and associates. They normally take place at 1pm on Friday, are free and open to everybody who’s interested in what we do.

After the Talk, we also invite you to stay with us for the afternoon to continue the conversation or work on your own projects. We provide chairs, tables, wireless and a great space. You bring what you need to work with (laptop/mobile). Our open afternoons close at 5pm.

Let us know if you’d like a tour of the space and we'll be happy to show you around. Send an email to admin@pmstudio.co.uk
