Long-term Studio project danceroom Spectroscopy (dS) has successfully combined science, art and technology to reveal the hidden beauty which is encoded into the mechanics of the natural world. This multi-award winning project has been deployed as an art installation, interactive dance environment and educational platform to enable thousands of people throughout the world to have a unique and playful experience within a simulated and immersive nanoworld.

The appearance and interactive dynamics of dS are defined by literally hundreds of parameters that require expert knowledge of physics, graphics and interactive technology to be effectively controlled. However, with the support of a simple computational model of Darwinian evolution, it is now possible to control and modify dS through subjective aesthetic preferences, providing anyone with the ability to design and shape their own interactive atomic experiences.

In this lunchtime talk UWE lecturer and studio resident Tom Mitchell and creative technologies intern Ed Davies will present their recent work evolving molecular aesthetics: creating an Interactive Evolutionary Computation interface for dS. Tom and Ed will provide an overview of this project and invite you to evolve your own atomic visuals via a graphical interface and a novel tangible interface developed just last week with residents Phill Tew, Pete Bennett, and Seb Madgwick.

This Lunchtime Talk is part of Open Studio Friday, which takes place at the Studio every week.

Do you want to find out what is going on at the Pervasive Media Studio? Are you interested in meeting our residents, talking about a specific project or curious about pervasive media? Why not pack a sandwich and join us for one of our Lunchtime Talks and Open Studio Friday.

Lunchtime Talks are informal presentations by Studio residents and associates. They normally take place at 1pm on Friday, are free and open to everybody who’s interested in what we do.

After the Talk, we also invite you to stay with us for the afternoon to continue the conversation or work on your own projects. We provide chairs, tables, wireless and a great space. You bring what you need to work with (laptop/mobile). Our open afternoons close at 5pm.

Let us know if you’d like a tour of the space and we'll be happy to show you around just before the talk. Send an email to admin@pmstudio.co.uk to book your place on a tour.
