Starting from Liz Faber's seminal work on computer voices, this talk will venture into the unexpected connections between voice and AI.
From HAL 3000 to Siri, voices had a substantial role in the subjectification and humanization of machines that helped positioning AIs as ‘mythical beings’ capable of mimicking, thinking, and talking like humans. Arguably this process exempted AI from a conscious sociological analysis.
In this talk, we will trace a line between a theory of voice as a possible theory for/against AI. With examples of talking AIs, imagined creatures and speculative AI futures, we will explore the multiple connexions between voice, AI, and posthumanism.
Join us online on YouTube Live, or in the building on Friday 17th February 2023 at 1pm for the talk and to take part in the Q and A discussion afterwards.
