One of the arts sector's biggest problems is the amount of unpaid labour that goes into writing grant proposals and applying for funding, often with very low odds of success. Artists can often spend far more time on unsuccessful applications than they do actually making creative work.

This year for Watershed's Winter Residency programme, we experimented with a new application process. Instead of requiring detailed proposals, we asked applicants to fill out a simple form, and had a random draw to build our shortlist. We were able to dramatically reduce the workload for unsuccessful applicants, and focus our efforts on supporting artists to develop their ideas.

In this talk, Martin will share some of the things we learned from that experiment, some of the reactions we received - both positive and negative! - and what we hope to take from it going forward.

Join us online on YouTube Live, or in the building on Friday 14th April 2023 at 1pm for the talk and to take part in the Q and A discussion afterwards.
