A new dimension of musical control, the MIDI-Moov and iMoov devices allow musicians to control almost any element of their sound using the movement of their body or instrument. The MIDI-Moov is a wireless MIDI controller that combines a 3-axis accelerometer with a wireless transmitter / receiver to control almost any parameter of an external effects processor. For example, a guitarist could strap the MIDI-Moov to their guitar and link to their existing effects unit to control an echo. Moving the neck of the guitar up would increase the volume of the echo and lowering the neck would remove the echo, all in real time. A demo of the system can be seen at: http://youtu.be/_Quw7YRv6-E. The idea came out of the Final Year Projects of Lee Arromba and Dan Newton at Bristol Univeristy. Lee won a business enterprise award for his accelerometer powered body suit controller, while Dan was published at the NIME and TEI conferences for his customisable MIDI sensor toolkit for musicians. This, coupled with the enthusiasm and enjoyment seen in musicians using the devices, provided the motivation and justification to start TangibleFX. As well as the MIDI-Moov, TangibleFX are developing an iPhone version called the iMoov, which has all the features of the MIDI-Moov in its wired form and will be available for download from the app store soon.
