Portrait of Yan
Yan is a freelance immersive producer based in Bristol, working at the intersection of creative storytelling, technology and social change. With a background in creative project management, a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design, and a Master of Arts in Virtual Reality, Yan’s practice combines thoughtful storytelling, accessible design, and the structure necessary to deliver ambitious creative work. Their work explores how emerging technologies, particularly XR, can be used as an accessible platform for sharing personal narratives, build community, and drive social change for good. As a resident at Pervasive Media Studio, Yan is developing projects that centre accessibility and grassroots connection in immersive tech.
Recent projects include production support for the Multisensory Storytelling Summit 2025 and the first Ida XR Network event in Bristol. Yan is actively involved in growing a South-West hub for Ida XR: a safe, accessible space for women, non-binary and trans people in immersive media to connect, collaborate and learn.
Their broader XR portfolio spans sectors including education, tourism, health, technology, and learning & development. This includes VR training tools for health and safety, interactive AR trails for museums, large-scale multisensory installations (featuring scent, lighting, soundscapes and set design), and supporting workshops such as Make, Create, Play (a series created for neurodivergent and d/Deaf participants to speculatively co-design what the future of accessible immersive experiences could look like).
One piece Yan plans to revisit during their residency is Let’s Talk, a VR documentary created in 2019 that explores lived experiences of mental health. Originally developed to encourage openness and conversation, the project is now being redeveloped as part of a wider campaign around trauma-informed support.
Passionate about community building and social change, Yan has also been an integral member of Quiet Moon (a group of women volunteering their skills and time to offer creative support to women’s charities in Bristol). They recently took on a part-time role with a mental health and homelessness charity, continuing their commitment to care-driven, socially conscious work.
“I’m keen to bring together my creative, project management and XR skills in ways that could benefit the organisation and its service users — particularly through exploring trauma-informed projects that support staff training, education, or meaningful engagement for clients.”
