Joss Affleck (they/them) is a BAFTA award-winning, Bath-born multidisciplinary performer, artist, animator and educator working across film, animation, design, visual art, and live performance.
Their practice draws on ritual, ecology, folklore, and queer storytelling, exploring how narratives and identities shift, break, and reform when pushed. They work across two connected strands: Studio Misterllaneous, a motion design and animation studio creating work for screens, live performance, and live art; and Mister Llaneous, their independent performance practice. Through both, Joss creates immersive, audio-visual worlds that blur the boundaries between screen, body, and audience, often combining 2D and 3D animation with live performance and interaction.
They are currently developing their first audio-visual solo show, The Skin Show, a deeply surreal, tenderly powerful folk-horror séance with dark comedy, drag-ish energy, folklore, and a dead granny. The show blends live visuals, sound, and performance, exploring themes of identity, generational trauma, inheritance, and what it means to live in a skin that doesn’t feel like your own. Recent projects also include The Time Travelling Granddad, a participatory storytelling project exploring dementia and memory through a child’s perspective; and Community Doom Scroll, an immersive work that transforms digital overwhelm into a collective ritual. Across these works, Joss explores themes of transformation, mental health, memory and shame.
Alongside this, Joss is developing The School of Unlearning, an alternative MA based at Pervasive Media Studio. The programme centres accessibility, life-wide learning, and non-hierarchical approaches to education, creating space for experimental, collaborative practice rooted in lived experience.
