Agnieszka Holland brings us the extraordinary and powerful story of the real-life Welsh journalist who exposed Stalin's genocidal famine in Soviet Ukraine, which killed almost 10 million people.
Mark Cosgrove, our Cinema Curator, explains:
Based on the true story of Welsh journalist Gareth Jones (played with energy and conviction by James Norton) who went behind the headlines coming out of Stalin’s Russia to report about the horrendous conditions ordinary Russians were living in 1930s Soviet Ukraine.
The story of Jones apparently inspired Orwell’s Animal Farm. A film relevant to today’s onslaught of ’fake’ news which Holland crafts like an old-fashioned thriller. I was looking to bring this back at Easter for Watershed audiences as the response when we first screened it was so positive."
