Watershed favourite Hirokazu Kore-eda's (Shoplifters, Still Walking, Like Father, Like Son) first South Korean production is a delicate and big-hearted drama about a young mother who leaves her baby at a church, unaware that black marketers intend to sell it on to any wealthy childless couple.
On a rainy night in Busan, So-young (Lee Ji Eun) leaves her baby in a 'baby box', a safe place set up in Korean churches for new mothers to leave unwanted infants. In a twist of fate, he's picked up by two men (Parasite's Song Kang Ho, who won the Cannes Best Actor prize for his performance, and Gang Dong-won) who intend to sell him at a high price to desperate parents. So-yong surprises the duo by returning to ensure her child finds a good home and the trio embark on a journey to find the right couple.
On this jouney they begin to build an unlikely family of their own, picking up a seven year old stowaway after a stop at an orphanage on the way. Broker is heartwarming, funny and moving, a film of gentle humanity and great warmth. Enjoy.
