Fandry
CTBA SPlease note: This was screened in Nov 2014
Teenager Jabya (Somnath Avghade) and his family come from an Indian tribe traditionally considered 'Dalit', or untouchable. Only they, for example, are 'allowed' to touch the unclean, troublesome pigs that run through the village. Jabya has fallen for a (socially) superior, lighter-skinned classmate and desperate to reach this unattainable dreamgirl, he tries to capture a mythical black sparrow, believing you can hypnotise a person by throwing its ashes on them. Director Manjule movingly captures his yearning and humiliation along with the societal and family constraints that shackle him all the way up until its gutwrenching climax. A uniquely effective attack on India's banned - but still lingering - caste system, this is a warmly involving vision of a country where beauty and chaos both reign, and a man might give his life for a pig's.
This special screening of Fandry is presented by BIFF (Bristol Indian Film Festival) in the run up to the 2015 Bristol Indian Film Festival. BIFF seeks to promote regional Indian cinema that breaks the boundaries in terms of cinematography and narration, as well as promoting social issues affecting the country.
The screening will be introduced by BIFF Festival Director Leon Etchells and will be followed by a post-screening drinks reception for all ticket holders hosted by Kingfisher, Soul Tree Wines and Bristol Sweetmart.
