Robot Poetics: Exploring Drawing with Robots

Paul O’Dowd joins us to discuss and demonstrate his latest robot, which he has built from scratch - concept, mechanisms, electronics, software - in order to question the human practise of drawing and artworks.

Speaker

Paul O'Dowd

Paul is a practicing artist, academic researcher/lecturer and freelance creative technologist based in Bristol UK. He was one of the co-founder to Rusty Squid Ltd, co-founder and steering committee member to Moving Object Group Bristol, and Associate Lecturer to both MA Design and BEng Robotics at the University of the West of England Bristol.

Paul will give us an overview of the development of his creative practice with robots, demonstrating his latest incarnation, the drawing robot. He is interested in the way drawing appears to come so naturally to human’s, whilst robots that draw, uncover complex questions about what we know and how we know it. Paul is not trying to recreate ‘human drawing’, rather he is trying to find something uniquely robotic and other. In doing so, he hopes to better establish the new idea of robot poetics.

Paul has had a varied career as a research scientist in self-organising swarms of robots, as co-founder of art & design studio Rusty Squid, and as researcher in Art & Design at the Centre for Fine Print Research. He has taken the last 8 months as an independently funded artist, practicing poetry, print making and robotics.

This Lunchtime Talk is part of Open Studio Friday, which takes place at the Studio every week.

Do you want to find out what is going on at the Pervasive Media Studio? Are you interested in meeting our residents, talking about a specific project or curious about pervasive media? Why not pack a sandwich and join us for one of our Lunchtime Talks and Open Studio Friday. Lunchtime Talks are informal presentations by Studio residents and associates. They normally take place at 1pm on Friday, are free and open to everybody who’s interested in what we do. After the Talk, we also invite you to stay with us for the afternoon to continue the conversation or work on your own projects. We provide chairs, tables, wireless and a great space. You bring what you need to work with (laptop/mobile). Our open afternoons close at 5pm. Let us know if you’d like a tour of the space and we'll be happy to show you around just before the talk. Send an email to: studio@watershed.co.uk to book your place on a tour.
