Dhaqan meaning 'the common thread that connects Somali peoples to their ancestral homelands' (A. A. Ilmi)

Fozia Ismail (of Arawelo Eats), will be talking about her Arnolfini  fellowship project Camel Meat & Cassette Tapes. The project was an exploration of Somali Tape Cultures which held families and Somali culture together across borders.  With Ayan Cilmi, Asmaa Jama and the Somali elders of Bristol, a soundscape about womanhood, Somali culture and resistance was created.

They wanted to archive the work done as part of project and continue creating together, and so the Dhaqan Collective was formed. The dhaqan collective is a feminist art collective of Somali women, centering the voices of womxn and elders in our community, and privileging co-creation and collaboration.

They model their collaboration together with the Somali elders they have worked with.

Join us on Fri 26th February, 13:00-14:00 for the talk and to take part in the discussion afterwards.
