Lunchtime Talk: Craig Against The Machine
Composer/Improviser/instrument builder Craig Scott talks about building and improvising with his Machine Learning assisted, semi-automated guitar as part of his 'Patterns in Practice' residency at Pervasive Media Studio.

Performer, composer and creative technologist Craig Scott creates sound works for human and non-human performers.Composer/Improviser/instrument builder Craig Scott talks about building and improvising with his Machine Learning assisted, semi-automated guitar as part of his artist in residence with 'Patterns in Practice' at Pervasive Media Studio.
Craig will also discuss his musical journey, the relationship between evolution of music and technology, function/malfunction and the uncanny in an attempt to understand how he finds himself entangled in such esoteric paraphernalia.
Patterns in Practice is a research project led by the University of Sheffield and UWE Bristol in partnership with Watershed, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. It seeks to understand how practitioner beliefs, values and emotions shape practitioner engagements with machine learning in drug discovery, higher education, and the arts.

The Pervasive Media Studio is a partnership between the Watershed, University of the West of England and University of Bristol. The lunchtime talks are partly supported by MyWorld, a project led by the University of Bristol to support creative industries in the region. Watershed is supported by Arts Council England.

Directions:
The Lunchtime talks take place in the Pervasive Media Studio Event Space. To access the Studio, please go to the Main Watershed Box Office entrance and go upstairs to the Café Bar. Walk across the cafe bar, turn right and walk towards the double doors. Go through into the corridor and walk all the way down until you reach the Studio. A member of staff will sign you in, and check your ticket, if you have booked.
The Studio is wheelchair accessible, and the events space has a hearing loop. The last talk of every month is BSL interpreted.
