Joss Affleck (they/them), aka Mister Llaneous, is a Bath-born, Bristol-based artist, animator, performer and creative technologist with a suitably miscellaneous practice. Working across animation, projection, clowning and immersive arts, they bring old forms of storytelling together with contemporary technologies to explore memory, identity and transformation.

Their work invites audiences to become participants, using everything from smartphones and spatial sound to family archives, puppetry and communal ritual. They are interested in how technology can create playful, intimate and deeply human experiences, and how queering folklore can open up new ways of understanding the stories we inherit.

Current projects include The Skin Show, an interactive solo performance exploring queer identity and transformation through audience smartphones, projection and immersive sound; Time Travelling Granddad, an intergenerational project exploring dementia and memory through animation and participatory storytelling; and Sauna Stories, which queers South West folklore through communal storytelling, heat, scent and ritual.

Joss previously spent five years working as an art director and motion designer within a BAFTA-winning film and television team. They continue to create animation and projection for screens, theatre and live performance through Studio Misterllaneous, alongside their independent artistic practice.

A resident at Pervasive Media Studio, Joss runs the School of Unlearning, an alternative arts education programme exploring accessible, collaborative and non-hierarchical ways of learning. Informed by lived experience of neurodivergence and disability, it questions inherited ideas about expertise, productivity and success, making space for experimentation, curiosity and getting things wrong.
