Memories and Mediascapes was a five-day Grundtvig workshop, in which participants from around Europe had the chance to capture and share personal memories using digital technologies. Inspired by its location on Bristol’s historic Harbourside, the workshop invited those taking part to share memories related to water. Through a series of hands-on activities, participants learnt storytelling techniques and developed practical skills such as recording and editing audio. Participants worked together to create a simple audio walk around the Harbourside, in which new technologies enabled recorded memories, to play on mobile phones at specific locations. The piece runs on Calvium's PIRL platform and is accompanied by an online map, enabling participants to easily share their work with friends and family at home.

The workshop was open to older learners (50+) from across Europe and was suitable for those with little or no experience of working with digital media. Simple tasks ensured participants increased skills and confidence and discovered how new technologies can add value to everyday experience. The workshop also encouraged participants to make new connections and inspired exchange of ideas across European nations.

Memories and Mediascapes was led by Glasgow-based artist Mandy Mcintosh, who employs an array of media to respond to particular social, historical and geographical contexts in her works. Mandy is also Creative Director of Ham and Enos. Click here to find out more about her.

Memories and Mediascapes is a Watershed project, supported by the Grundtvig programme.
