Dr Andrew Calway is a Reader in Computer Vision at the University of Bristol specialising in fundamental tools for automated understanding the world from images and applying those tools to real-world applications. He has a particular interest in designing autonomous systems which are capable of sensing where they are and what is around them. Working with industrial and creative partners on inter-disciplinary projects is an important part of his work.

Much of this work has focused on the technology underpinning Augmented Reality (AR). He was Principal Investigator on VIEWNET, which developed one of the first demonstrations of mobile AR, and on COGNITO, an EU funded project, which developed an on-body sensing system capable of learning human actions to direct useful AR content delivery. Dr Calway has published over 80 scientific publications. He is currently the University of Bristol Academic Lead for the Bristol VR Lab.
