Oscar®-winning director László Nemes’ (Son of Saul, Sunset) highly anticipated third feature, set in post-war Budapest, follows a boy uncovering his family’s fractured history against the brutal Hungarian Uprising.
Set in 1957, just one year after the Soviet suppression of the Hungarian Uprising, Orphan follows young Andor (Bojtorján Barabas), who clings to the hope that his father, a Hungarian Jew who disappeared during World War II, will one day return.
When a brutish stranger from the nearby countryside arrives, claiming a mysterious link to his mother’s past, Andor is thrust into a personal reckoning. Long-buried secrets of wartime survival and moral compromise begin to surface, forcing him to confront the cost of truth and the meaning of resilience under tyranny.
A jarring and tragic yet beautiful portrait of survival, despite all the odds.
