Two people examine a small object at a cluttered worktable under red light, beside a whiteboard covered in sketches and notes; the mood is focused and tense.

Making the World Differently

Published on 13 Oct

This report explores what skills and training opportunities young people need for a career in creative technologies.

The report is written by artist and educator Frazer Meakin, who spent ten months as a MyWord Fellow working directly with young people, schools and industry across Bristol. During this time, Frazer was supported by Watershed and the Skills and Training team at the University of Bristol. Frazer researched how the creative technology sector can better prepare, support and welcome the next generation of talent.

This report was produced with support from MyWorld.

MyWorld is a creative technology programme funded by UK Research and Innovation. It builds on the production, technology and research strengths of the West of England to create a globally unique proposition for creative technology. Watershed co-commissioned this research in partnership with MyWorld and the University of Bristol, to inform our own work bridging together education, industry and young people, and to share what we've learned more widely.

Findings in this report are based on workshops and research undertaken directly with young people and schools. This includes work experience programmes run at Watershed's Pervasive Media Studio and interviews with teachers, careers leads and industry professionals. The findings are also informed by research undertaken by bodies such as the World Economic Forum, DCMS and the Gatsby Charitable Foundation.
