The project takes a dance and somatic approach to investigate what happens to moving, sensing bodies embedded in simulated virtual worlds. Dance artist and researcher Lisa May Thomas, project artistic lead, will be talking about how this project came to be, the creative processes involved across many different disciplines, and the prototype participatory installation event which happened at the University of Bristol this September.

The Figuring project brings together an experienced team of dancers, designers, digital technicians, and computational scientists, enabling an exchange of skills and knowledge between scientific and artistic practices. Molecular physicist and Computer Scientist Dr. David Glowacki, is the scientific and technological lead for the project.

Accompanying Lisa to talk about their own roles on the project will be Mark Wonnacott, who co-designed the visual virtual aesthetic for Figuring and Emma Hughes, the project Producer.

This Lunchtime Talk is part of Open Studio Friday, which takes place at the Studio every week.

Why not pack a sandwich and join us for one of our Lunchtime Talks and Open Studio Friday. Lunchtime Talks are informal presentations by Studio residents and associates. They normally take place at 1pm on Friday, are free and open to everybody who’s interested in what we do. After the Talk, we also invite you to stay with us for the afternoon to continue the conversation or work on your own projects. We provide chairs, tables, wireless and a great space. You bring what you need to work with (laptop/mobile). Our open afternoons close at 5pm. Let us know if you’d like a tour of the space and we'll be happy to show you around just before the talk.
