Deaf Conversations about Cinema: The Holdovers

Talk

Please note: This event took place in Jan 2024

Join us at the 18:00 screening of The Holdovers on Mon 22 Jan which will feature Descriptive Subtitles and an introduction from Nathan Hardie, fellow audience member and Bristolian film critic.

This will be followed at 20:15 by a post screening discussion in the Café & Bar with audience members and Nathan. The evening will be hosted by Deaf artist, performer and filmmaker David Ellington and will feature BSL interpretation throughout.

Alexander Payne’s Oscar®-tipped 1970- set comedy drama pays tribute to that period, as if it were made back then, without nostalgia and imitation. It’s also being tipped as Paul Giamatti’s best performance since Sideways.

The Holdvers is a bittersweet comedy-drama about misfits, grumpy teacher Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti), surly, unsociable teen Angus Tully (Dominic Sessa) and grieving mother Mary Lamb Da’Vine Joy Randolph) who are all stranded together for the holidays at a New England boarding school in 1970.

Please join us after the screening in the Café/Bar for an informal discussion, which will include BSL interpretation. You’ll receive 10% off drinks with your cinema ticket – so grab a glass and let us know your thoughts about The Holdovers.
