How Open Bionics creates bionic limbs from video games and movies for amputees

Lunchtime Talks are a series of informal presentations at Watershed's Pervasive Media Studio. They normally take place at 13:00 on a Friday, are free and are open to everybody who is interested in what they do. Come along, bring a sandwich, and get to know more about the Studio community, current and up-coming projects, or residents' work.

In this Lunchtime Talk Open Bionics co-founder Sammy Payne will discuss how science fiction and popular culture inspired the team at Open Bionics. The talk will take place in Cinema 1 and feature BSL interpretation and live captions will be provided by Stage Text.

Open Bionics are a Bristol based company developing assistive and affordable robotic technologies that enhance the human body. Co-founder and Pervasive Media Studio resident Sammy Payne will discuss how science fiction and popular culture inspired the team to create artificial limbs from the realms of video games and Disney universes. Open Bionics launched their first 3D printed bionic arm, the Hero Arm, on 25 April 2018.

Sammy will be joined by Daniel Melville, the first Hero Arm user who has helped Open Bionics throughout their journey of co-creation and co-design. Dan runs a 3D printing business called Handy Dan’s, that was born out of his love of technology and passion for art and design.

Open Bionics champions inclusive design, quality engineering, and personal style. Through this approach they hope to create a legacy of bionic limbs that limb different people are proud to wear.

The Pervasive Media Studio is located within the Watershed building. Let us know if you'd like a tour and we'll be happy to show you around. Send an email to studio@watershed.co.uk.
