After the success of Point Blank and Deliverance, Warner Bros. offered John Boorman the opportunity of a lifetime... the chance to direct a sequel to William Friedkin’s 1973 blockbuster hit The Exorcist. He went on to make one of the greatest film follies of all time (also the biggest commercial disaster of his illustrious career), a metaphysical thriller that failed to meet audience expectations on its highly anticipated release.
It has been four years since the exorcism that saved the life of Regan MacNeil (Linda Blair) and caused the deaths of Lankester Merrin (Max Von Sydow) and Damien Karras, the priests who helped her. Science and religion, a psychiatrist and a troubled priest (Richard Burton) all combine in an attempt to save her while, in the heart of Africa, a magician offers an answer.
With an all-star cast, spectacular sets, sublime cinematography, and a standout score from legendary composer Ennio Morricone, this is a daring vision, packed with the kind of bold ideas and extraordinary images that Boorman would also explore in Zardoz and Excalibur.
With an introduction by Ti Singh (Forbidden Worlds, Bristol Bad Film Club).
