Hello everyone. How are we all holding up? Well. Things have certainly taken a turn since we last spoke. If you don't already know, the Watershed building is closed and our upcoming screenings and events have been cancelled.
We are busy cooking up what we will do for you online to continue to bring you the best in independent film and creative tech, more from the Pervasive Media Studio and Rife Magazine too, and just generally stay in touch with you all. You are mega important to us and we're not just going to switch off the lights.
We need your support to re-open. One of the most frequent questions we've been getting is something along the lines of "can you set up a Watershed streaming service? I would pay for that!". We can't - but we have an alternative! So see below for a little message from Mark Cosgrove, our Cinema Curator, and details of a much-needed gift from our friends at MUBI:
"We are going through unprecedented times and we have to look after ourselves, our families, friends and communities. It has been a real shock to have to close Watershed because we live and breathe for you, our audience, but given the extraordinary circumstances we all have to be responsible for each other. In amongst all the upheavals we will still have film to inspire and entertain. We may not have the communal cinema experience at the moment but thanks to the online world we can now access films in a way my younger self could only dream of!
"In response to Watershed’s closure we have been asked by many people “is there a way we can access your film programme online?” The short answer is unfortunately not – I won’t go into the issue of rights, licensing etc but we are talking to partners and coming up with ways we can work in partnership to deliver a film programme to you. The first is from our good friends at MUBI. We have screened a number of their films at Watershed and, in fact, were in middle of showing their new film Bacarau when we had to close. You can now watch it at MUBI as they are offering our audience 90 day free access to their site which has a fantastic selection of world cinema and writing about film. Sign up here and watch this space for more information on keeping in touch with world and independent film."
There's more to come. We'll let you know what's happening very soon.
With all our love,
Team Watershed x
