An update on our toilets

Changes to the EHRC’s statutory Code of Practice came into effect on 5 August 2026, impacting how service providers provide facilities which relate to gender. We welcome ongoing legal challenge to the code and will continue to raise our voices with others against the discrimination and confusion it creates.  

Firstly, Watershed is Trans+ Inclusive. We believe that everyone should be able to access cultural provision in a way where they can truly be themselves. 

We will continue to offer excellent, free to access public toilets which meet a range of needs and access requirements. No one will be asked to evidence their sex in order to use our facilities. 

You will see a few temporary updates to our signage and provision which centre clarity and inclusion. We did not want to make these updates and think they are unnecessary as our toilets work really well, but we also don’t want to spend our dwindling reserves on fighting unnecessary court battles.  

All of our main toilets are still Trans+ inclusive – and we have changed the signage in the Café & Bar corridor to make this clearer for everyone. After a risk assessment and legal advice we have designated some single sex toilets at the end of the cinema corridor.

• The full policy and equality impact assessment will be reviewed by our Board of Trustees at their next meeting in the Autumn and there may be further changes.
