What do young people want to communicate about where they live, and what is different when they show rather than tell? How can animation bring online maps to life?
Play Disrupt is a public engagement studio, using playful methods to engage people in decisions about where they live. Malcolm Hamilton, creative director of Play Disrupt, is interested in using play centred methodologies as catalysts for increasing participation in civic decision making. Nia Evans is a creative engagement producer at Play Disrupt, and an artist working in movement and film.
We are co-researchers on the Public Map, a University of Cambridge led research project and online mapping platform designed to increase civic participation in planning, particularly in regards to young people. As part of Public Map, we’ve worked with over 400 young people across Anglesey, co-designing a process to create animated symbols for children to illustrate how they feel about where they live. In this lunchtime talk, we’ll be sharing young people’s creative outputs, and the journey of co-designing new ways of making maps.
Join us online on YouTube Live, or in the building on Friday 22nd May at 13:00 for the talk and to take part in the Q and A discussion afterwards.
