Straight8 “Super 8MM” Workshop - Making New Films with Old Tech

Filmmaker, Ed Sayers is the creator and founder of globally renowned Straight8 - a highly competitive filmmaking challenge that has been running for over 20 years, where filmmakers are invited to make a film with one roll of Super 8mm film with no retakes, no editing or post-production. And the very best are shown at a leading film festival, in livestreams, always without the filmmakers seeing their work before it’s publicly unveiled. In this Super 8 filmmaking masterclass Ed’s going to share how to make new films with old tech and discuss how in some ways it could be a greener creative response to making films in a time of climate.

This workshop will cover:

  • An intro to the Super 8mm filmmaking process with a practical look at, and feel of the tech.
  • Showcase of films made on Super 8 for the STRAIGHT 8 competition and how they achieved their results.
  • How to get the best out of Super 8 and how it and STRAIGHT 8 can positively affect all of your filmmaking.

After the workshops (from 17:00) there will be an informal networking session for workshop participants in the Watershed bar. Participants will be entitled to one drink per person.

Although this session is free of charge, If you have any financial barriers in attending, we are offering a limited number of first come-first served bursaries of £30 to attend. Please contact liz.c@watershed.co.uk to arrange a bursary in advance of the event.

These workshops are part of Watershed's The Future is Collective programme, supported by Arts Council England. They are also partially funded by Bristol + Bath Creative R+D.
