The first and finest Hollywood adaptation of James M Cain's (Double Indemnity, Mildred Pierce) legendary 1934 crime novel is a classic of film noir from 1946, establishing both Lana Turner and John Garfield as major stars of post-war Hollywood.

Nick Smith (Cecil Kellaway) and his young wife Cora (Turner) take on drifter Frank Chambers (Garfield) as an employee at their roadside cafe. Cora is searching for a way out of her drab day-to-day existence - and she might just have found it.

Brimming with sexuality, deceit, and death from the outset, this perfectly crafted adaptation by director Tay Garnett and writers Harry Ruskin and Niven Busch pushed the boundaries of what could and couldn’t be seen in the cinema.

Presented in collaboration with Film Noir UK, the first dedicated film organisation in the UK celebrating the ever-influential world of film noir.
