Showgirls is back, now thirty and flirtier than ever. Nominated across a remarkable thirteen categories at the 1995 Golden Raspberry Awards, Paul Verhoeven’s Showgirls is – depending on who you ask – a critically-panned flop or a deeply misunderstood cult masterpiece.
Elizabeth Berkley is Nomi Malone, a naïve young woman who hitchhikes to Las Vegas with starry-eyed ambitions. Cheated from the outset, she pulls her way up from shifts at the Cheetah’s Gentleman's Club to a place in the chorus line at the Stardust Casino. But in the process, ruffles the feathers of Cristal Conners (Gina Gershon) – lead of Goddess, the Casino’s topless dance revue. When Nomi then seduces Cristal’s boyfriend – an entertainment director at the casino (Kyle MacLachlan) – in an act of petty revenge, a tumultuous, sexually-charged power-play erupts between the two women.
Thirty years after its initial release, Showgirls is as deeply divisive as it’s ever been, but beloved in the LGBT+ community for its outrageous camp and spectacular levels of sleaze. Don’t miss the opportunity to let it reveal itself to you at Queer Vision in a sizzling new 4K restoration.
