Playful and beautifully crafted, this smart, sweet fiction feature debut from Neo Sora transports us to a dystopian near-future Tokyo – under the constant threat of earthquakes and dangerously close to becoming a total surveillance state.

Amidst the oppressive atmosphere of their school, wannabe DJs Yuta (Hayato Kurihara) and Kou (Yukito Hidaka) pursue their secret passion for dance music – trying their best to escape the rapidly increasing cameras  throughout the city and their school, where a new system monitors and instantly scrutinises student behaviour. How should they fight back – with traditional protests and sit-ins, or by staging shocking and spectacular pranks?

Infused with raw energy and pulsing with a techno soundtrack, Happyend is both a vivid coming-of-age portrait and a hopeful, youthful vision of resistance and joy in the face of control.

The Tue 23 Sept 17:30 screening of Happyend will be hosted by our 16-19 Film Club. If you’re aged 16-19, passionate about cinema and looking to meet like-minded people, join us in the Pervasive Media Studio after the screening for a post-film discussion (snacks provided).

  • There will be a Cinébabies screening (for parents/carers of babies under 12 months) of Happyend on Tue 23 Sept at 11:00.
  • Happyend on Tue 23 Sep is part of our Cinébites deal: get 30% off any main dish in the Café & Bar with a valid ticket for Club Shed members.
