Douglas Sirk’s beautiful film about class and conformity in 1950s small-town America marks the pinnacle of Hollywood melodrama.

Cary Scott (Jane Wyman) is a widow emerging from mourning to embrace the world again. She rejects a marriage offer from an older man who promises her companionship and affection. Why? It’s because she is drawn to her gardener, Ron (Rock Hudson).

But when their romance prompts the scorn of her everyone around her, she must decide whether to pursue her own happiness or carry on a lonely existence.
