“Life is a war of attrition. You have to stay active on all fronts. It's one thing after another. I've tried to control a chaotic universe. And it's a losing battle. But I can't let go. I've tried, but I can't.” Harvey Pekar
Winner of the 2003 Sundance Grand Jury Prize, American Splendor is a quite brilliant, genre-bending groundbreaking film that mixes documentary and fiction to bring Harvey Pekar’s 1976 underground comic series to life. Starring Paul Giamatti in an award-winning performance as the cynical, intellectual, and uncompromising file clerk, whi documents his existence in comic book form.
The film explores the intersection of art and life as Harvey struggles through the banality of his existence in his Cleveland neighbourhood to find meaning and love in life. It’s a warm, sardonically funny and ultimately uplifting story about two depressives finding love among their neuroses - the ultimate anti-biopic.
