In this Lunchtime Talk we will introduce Nowism, our next exhibition in Undershed opening Thu 11 - Sun 28 June.
Developed during a residency alongside researchers at the University of Bristol’s ESRC Centre for Sociodigital Futures, the four artists are all exploring alternative socially just, digital futures.
Nowism brings together four playful, interactive projects that encourage reflection on:
- How emerging technologies are shaping our everyday lives
- Who gets to predict futures
During this talk, the curators, researchers and some of the artists will discuss:
- Art thinking
- The role of creatives in residence in a research centre
- The works-in-progress developed during the residency
Co-curators and researchers Paul Clarke and Helen Manchester (University of Bristol) and Curator and Producer Hannah Redler Hawes will discuss the narrative of the exhibition, including their experience of collaborating with the artists and connections with the Centre’s research on how social and digital futures shape one another.
Some of the artists will also join to introduce the work they have co-created:
- Vincent Baidoo's Solar Punk Bristol builds a transmedia (telling a story across multiple platforms and formats), technologically optimistic world.
- Alistair Gentry’s Folk Heroes of the Pre-Apocalypse presents near-future activist characters who resist corporate futures.
- Annette Mees' We live in a World Made of Gifts, explores a counter-infrastructure for connection.
- Rachel Smith's Over Head Pareidolia invites us to make ‘faces’ that tease the limits of emotion detection software.
