Poet, educator, activist and entrepreneur Lawrence Hoo showed his first film in Watershed in October 2006 – twenty years ago this month.
As we re-screen Inner City Tales (2006), a documentary exploring the social conditions, community concerns and realities of St Paul’s and Easton, the event will also feature Lawrence reading his poetry and sharing stories from his work.
Inner City Tales was created whilst Lawrence was artist in residence at Kuumba. Lawrence exhibited HOOSTORY at Centrespace Gallery in 2007 and published the collection in 2011 with a book launch and exhibition at Wider St Street Gallery. He joined Watershed’s Pervasive Media Studio in 2016. In 2019 with Chaz Golding, he set up CARGO – changing the way that people across the world acknowledge and teach African and African Diaspora contributions to history. CARGO has gone on to produce installations, a book, an online learning platform, a BBC documentary and loads more.
Sharing our many creative collaborations with Lawrence, the event will be chaired by Clare Reddington, Watershed CEO, and will celebrate the enormous contribution that Lawrence has made to art, equality and talent development in Bristol and beyond.
We will be joined in the bar afterwards by DJs Ray Mighty (Smith & Mighty), Wayne Irie, Selecta Watson and Rob Morris - handpicked by Lawrence to complete the event.
