Unearthing a Buried History: Cuito Cuanavale, Decolonisation and New Technology
part of Afrika Eye 2026
What if you could travel back to 1988, stand on a battlefield in Angola that changed Africa's history, and witness moments that helped bring South African apartheid to its knees? Nelson Mandela declared: “Cuito Cuanavale has been a turning point in the struggle to free the continent and our country from the scourge of apartheid!” Yet for many young Africans, this extraordinary story remains largely unknown.
As young Tanzanian creatives, OnaStories believe history shouldn't just be remembered. It should be experienced. Imagine walking through a virtual museum, exploring military vehicles in 3D, watching archival footage come alive, or reconstructing lost artefacts and missing fragments of history. Could technology help us see what time has erased, without losing sight of historical truth?
On Sat 21 Nov, Tanzania's OnaStories joins Afrika Eye, Simon Bright, and Rik Lander (UWE Bristol) at Watershed for an interactive workshop. Through archival film, immersive concepts, VR, AR and immersive reality we will explore new ways of bringing Africa's liberation history to life. Come curious. Bring your ideas. Help us imagine a museum where history doesn't sit behind glass, but comes alive around you.
The past shaped our freedom. What if we could step inside it?
Tickets for this workshop are priced at £5.00 full (plus 12% booking fee*) / £3.50 concessions (plus 12% booking fee*).
*Booking fee applies to online and phone booking only.
