The Way To Documentary

You've made a short documentary film, but where do you go from here?

In this talk, a panel of industry specialists explore the possibilities available to a documentary filmmaker, and offer practical, real-world advice.

Exploring the diverse progression routes and opportunities for short documentary filmmakers, the panel discuss how to advance towards theatrical documentary making, television production, the festival circuit, and how to secure a commission.

The panel were;

Jes Benstock is an award-winning British filmmaker who has directed internationally recognised documentaries, short fiction and music promos. His first feature length film, The British Guide to Showing Off is a documentary about artist Andrew Logan's Alternative Miss World Show.

Harry Marshall is the Creative Director of Icon Films, a Bristol-based production company. Harry has won numerous national and international awards (Emmy/ Grierson/ Telluride/ Jackson Hole/ Missoula/ Wildscreen) and nominations for his work as director, writer and executive producer.

Andy Mosse is Innovations Producer at the BBC, and has worked on a number of productions including BBC Three’s Cannabis: What’s the Harm? and the BBC Three comedy guide Wu-How: The Ninja How To Guide.

Charlie Phillips is the Marketplace Producer for Sheffield Doc/Fest, co-ordinating the MeetMarket, a place for filmmakers and producers to present their ideas to commissioners, buyers and distributors. Charlie was the Editor of FourDocs, Channel 4’s BAFTA-winning online documentary channel.

Dominic Weston is a freelance producer, director and writer. Dominic has been closely involved with Wildscreen, the international Wildlife Film Festival, for more than 8 years and produced the Panda Awards Ceremony for the last three festivals. Currently working at Icon Films in Development, Dominic series produced three seasons of Icon Films VT shorts for BBC 1’s The One Show.
