Preview: The History of Concrete
classified 18 (CTBA)Partially Subtitled screening
"Hilarious. John Wilson is the Werner Herzog of the mundane." - The Hollywood Reporter
Join us for this preview screening of one of the most hotly anticipated documentaries of the year – The History of Concrete.
Following the finale of his TV series, filmmaker John Wilson (How To with John Wilson) looks to the bedrock of his beloved New York City for inspiration and structure. Concrete, the world's most widely used building material, appears as an ever-present life force, and John sets out to make the definitive documentary on the matter.
To tell this seemingly drab story, he decides to use the industry-approved Hallmark formula to increase his movie's appeal. But his foundation soon begins to crumble – literally and figuratively – as he struggles to balance artistic freedom with the realities of the modern film industry.
WATERSHED RECOMMENDS
"A film called The History of Concrete has absolutely no business being this good. I was lucky enough to catch a preview at Copenhagen Doc Fest back in March, followed by a live Q&A with John Wilson – and as a massive How To with John Wilson fan, I was intrigued to see how his first feature would translate. Turns out, it’s hilarious, touching and surprisingly life-affirming. I laughed, cried, cry-laughed. Who knew concrete could make you feel so much?! Go watch it. You’ll never look at a pavement the same way again."
