Like many other young women of her generation, Sin-ja (played by Lee Min-ja) finds herself a war widow struggling to survive and raise her daughter alone in 1950s Seoul. She faces pressure to remain loyal to her deceased husband’s memory, yet strives for personal happiness, quietly resisting the social constraints placed upon her.

Filmed on 16mm shortly after the Korean War and just months after the birth of her child, The Widow was made under extraordinary circumstance with Park carrying her infant on her back during production, building her own sets, and even cooking for the crew to reduce costs.

Anchored by Lee Min-ja’s restrained yet compelling performance, it stands not only as a portrait of female subjectivity in a period of social upheaval, but also as a testament to the conditions under which it was made. Upon its release, The Widow was screened in only one cinema in Seoul for four days. South Korea’s first female filmmaker Park Nam-ok did not make another film.

History has not been kind to the work itself. The final reel is lost, and the remaining ending survives without sound. Despite this, The Widow remains a singular and essential film, both for its portrayal of modern womanhood and for the precedent it set within Korean cinema.

This 4K digital restoration was completed in 2020 by the Korean Film Archive and the Image Power Station using the 16mm original negative. A 16mm print element was also used to replace missing frames, though both materials were incomplete.

With the support of the Korean Film Archive.

With an introduction by Rehana Esmail from Cinelogue, a curated streaming platform centring cinema from the Global Majority.
