In 1974 New Delhi, Anand “Annie” Grover, a student at the state architecture institute, is repeating his fifth year – for the fourth time! Four years ago, he made a derogatory joke about the dean in the men’s toilet. Since then, he has received a “fail” in every exam. Word is the dean is planning to fail Annie again. But this time, his fellow students plan to come to his aid.
Drawing on her own student days in architecture, Arundhati Roy channels the spirit of 1970s New Delhi into an authentic snapshot of university life, set against a vibrant backdrop of Marxism, parties and Beatles songs. Directed by her husband Pradip Krishen, Roy’s own performance as rebellious student Radha rings with authenticity; beautifully captures this zeitgeist.
Originally made for television, In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones achieved cult status - particularly amongst generations of independently minded Indian students - through viewings on VHS cassettes. A few years ago, Pradip Krishen donated his 16mm original copy to the Film Heritage Foundation in Mumbai. A 4K restoration was undertaken by the Foundation in collaboration with the director using the 16mm camera negative and a 35mm print which you can now experience on the big screen.
Restored in 4K by Film Heritage Foundation at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory in association with the director Pradip Krishen. Funding provided by Film Heritage Foundation.
With an introduction by Film scholar, curator and founder of Day for Night Sonali Joshi.
