Please note: This event took place in June 2018
Lunchtime Talks are a series of informal presentations at Watershed's Pervasive Media Studio. They normally take place at 13:00 on a Friday, are free and are open to everybody who is interested in what they do. Come along, bring a sandwich, and get to know more about the Studio community, current and up-coming projects, or residents' work.
In this Lunchtime Talk Studio residents and artists Ella Good and Nicki Kent join us to discuss their latest project, to design, develop and build a house that has everything humans will need to live on Mars.
The project looks at closely at technology but also the wider implications for humans living on Mars. They will share with us some of their social, psychological and philosophical questions that challenge not only about how we live now but how we might live, on and off-world in the future. This is not just a thought experiment. Ella and Nicki fully intend to build this, and when they do it will be with communities across Bristol as a large-scale participatory art project.
Nicki and Ella are also thinking about how they can make a house today for a future on Mars with accessible technologies. What can life on Mars teach us about sustainable technologies for Earth? What does the scenario of humans leaving Earth permanently provoke in terms of sociological and cultural inquiry?
The Pervasive Media Studio is located within the Watershed building. Let us know if you'd like a tour and we'll be happy to show you around. Send an email to studio@watershed.co.uk.
